Beauty and your sleep: Study spells out the science behind beauty rest

Sleep-Deprived Individuals Appear Less Healthy and Attractive, Study Finds

Swedish researchers say there’s an important link between sleep and your physical appearance. In a study published today (Dec.15,2010)  in the British Medical Journal, researcher John Axelsson and his team at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm found that sleep-deprived individuals appear less healthy, more tired, and less attractive than those who have received a full night’s worth of sleep.

Sleep is the body’s natural beauty treatment,” Axelsson said. “It’s probably more effective than any other treatment you could buy.”

Subjects Photographed Before and After Sleep Deprivation

In the study, 23 healthy adults from ages 18 to 31 were first photographed after eight hours of sleep, wearing no makeup. The same adults were photographed again after sleeping only five hours and being kept awake for a full 31 hours, with the same lighting and camera settings.

The photos were rated by 65 untrained observers who graded the images in these three categories — how healthy, attractive, and tired the individuals appeared. On the whole, the participants were judged to be worse-off after sleep deprivation, in all categories, and the scientists believe the effects would be even more dramatic in person, when factors like blink rate and drowsiness could be observed.

Only one photo set was publicly released from the sample, showing a young man. After sleep deprivation, his eyes seem duller and the skin under his eyes appears puffy.

While the effects in Axelsson’s research were observed after severe sleep deprivation, he says his team will soon tackle whether an occasional short night of sleep can also cause problems. This experiment called for severe deprivation because the scientists wanted to maximize any effects.

“We cannot really say when the effects start … if it’s six hours or five hours, but it probably starts gradually,” Axelsson said. “It’s possible that you get these effects through chronic sleep deprivation as well,”

Study Prompted by Daughter’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’ Question

The idea of beauty rest is ingrained in popular culture, but it’s apparently never been put to the test by science. Axelsson said his young daughter gave him the reason to take on the subject. She was watching the classic animated film “Sleeping Beauty” when she had a question.

My daughter asked me, why is the sleeping beauty so beautiful? Is it because she sleeps a lot?” Axelsson recalled. “As a scientist, I couldn’t answer, so I had to do a study.”

The Swedish research team says its findings have implications beyond looking good. Axelsson said that the findings could be important for doctors, who should familiarize themselves with the sleep history of a patient to provide a more precise diagnosis.

Plenty of research points to the importance of a good night’s sleep. Over the years, studies have found links between poor sleep and Alzheimer’s disease, depression, and even weight gain.  In 2008, the Centers for Disease Control found that 50 to 70 million Americans suffer from constant sleep loss or sleep disorders, and the number of people averaging six hours of sleep or less was on the rise.

Excerpt: Israel (also Yisroel or Yisrol) Rosenberg (ca. 1850 1903 or 1904; Yiddish/Hebrew: ) founded the first Yiddish theater troupe in Imperial Russia. A personable “hole-and-corner lawyer” (that is, one without a diploma) and swindler in Odessa, Rosenberg was part of the migration of merchants and middlemen to Bucharest, Romania at the start of the Russo-Turkish War in 1887. These merchants and middlemen would prove a crucial component of the audience for the nascent professional Yiddish-language theater, consisting at that time only of a single troupe, that of Abraham Goldfaden. Unlike the rest of the migrants, Rosenberg actually joined the troupe and became an actor. Like many who worked with Goldfaden, he soon chafed under the latter’s imperious style and with his countryman Jacob Spivakovsky, put together his own travelling troupe and set out for the eastern part of Romania. At first they did well, but with the end of the war much of their audience returned to Russia; after running through their money playing in the provinces, they turned up nearly broke in Odessa, where there was a pre-made audience of those who had already seen Yiddish theater in Romania during the recent war. There, in spring 1878, Rosenberg obtained some small backing and formed a troupe including Spivakovsky; Broder singers “Schmul with the Hoarse Throat”, “Boris Budgoy” (Boris Holtzerman), Laizer Duke, Aaron Schrage; Jacob Adler, at that time new to performing; Sophia (Sonya) Oberlander, who later married Adler; and Masha Moskovich, whom Adler in his memoir describes as “a red-gold-haired beauty”; and various others, including singers from a local synagogue choir. Their first performance was at Akiva’s restaurant, and consisted of two light vaudevilles and Goldfaden’s ve… More:

A Changed Man And Other Tales (Large Print Edition)

$34.87

The great British novelist Thomas Hardy, among other things, was the author of the poem, “The Dead Man Walking.” Considered the “writer of Dorset,” Hardy’s fictional Wessex is perhaps bleaker than the real Dorset itself, long possessed of a hard, cold, lonely beauty. A Changed Man and Other Tales is a collection of Hardy’s stories written between 1880 and 1910. The title story is reminiscent of Hardy’s longer, darker novels such as Jude the Obscure. The “Changed Man” is Captain Maumbry, a dashing Hussar from a regiment that comes to Casterbridge, captivating all the young women and most of the young men. But the regiment is “haunted” and — after a new parson comes to town, the formerly carefree soldier Maumbry is transformed into a deeply religious minister. But his wife has no intention of becoming a poor parson’s bridge; the dissolution of their marriage and both of their lives constitutes the rest of the tale. In distilling deep insight from what serves as cruel gossip in most towns — not merely Casterbridge — Hardy is writing about his heart’s truest subject. A Changed Man and Other Tales is highly recommended for readers who are moved by such bleak, uncompromising, yet truthful visions.

The whole southern coast of Labrador is notable for its rivers which empty their floods, swelled in the spring by the melting snows, into the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The first of these is the St. Marguerite River, which, like nearly all these rivers, cuts through sand bluffs and is partly blocked by a bar extending part way across the mouth from the east. A Transition to Abstract Mathematics: Learning Mathematical Thinking and Writing

A Transition to Abstract Mathematics: Learning Mathematical Thinking and Writing

$89.95

Constructing concise and correct proofs is one of the most challenging aspects of learning to work with advanced mathematics. Meeting this challenge is a defining moment for those considering a career in mathematics or related fields. Mathematical Thinking and Writing teaches readers to construct proofs and communicate with the precision necessary for working with abstraction. It is based on two premises: composing clear and accurate mathematical arguments is critical in abstract mathematics, and that this skill requires development and support. Abstraction is the destination, not the starting point.Maddox methodically builds toward a thorough understanding of the proof process, demonstrating and encouraging mathematical thinking along the way. Skillful use of analogy clarifies abstract ideas. Clearly presented methods of mathematical precision provide an understanding of the nature of mathematics and its defining structure. After mastering the art of the proof process, the reader may pursue two independent paths. The latter parts are purposefully designed to rest on the foundation of the first, and climb quickly into analysis or algebra. Maddox addresses fundamental principles in these two areas, so that readers can apply their mathematical thinking and writing skills to these new concepts. From this exposure, readers experience the beauty of the mathematical landscape and further develop their ability to work with abstract ideas.• Covers the full range of techniques used in proofs, including contrapositive, induction, and proof by contradiction• Explains identification of techniques and how they are applied in the specific problem• Illustrates how to read written proofs with many step by step examples• Includes 20% more exercises than the first edition that are integrated into the material instead of end of chapter• The Instructors Guide and Solutions Manual points out which exercises simply must be either

“Yes, but later, when they speak of her, what do they say?” I asked.”Oh hell, I don’t know. I just fill the glasses. Man, this is the kind of talk that makes a barkeep like me goofy. Mostly, I keep the customers on the other side of the counter, but she, she can’t be stopped – comes over the top and just rips your spleen.”"Fill the glasses. Mop the bar. You probably know, they’re closing this place next month, and I’m out of work with no prospects, because the urban renewal wrecking ball is knocking down, not just this joint, but the whole Avenue, and, and all I’m doing is worrying what’s going to happen to Abby, but damn it, I can’t help it, this place connect her to Whitey, and all the rest of us to her.”"Ahhh . . . ” He let out a deep sigh, and then leaned over the bar and used his big whisper. “Ah, but this woman did it all . . . And so they . . . They tell of the things she did for Whitey. They tell of her exploits, of her saving his life, and her avenging his death – of her thrusting that heavy auger. And they make up things, sensitive, personal things – lavender baths, rose petal pillows – things no one could possibly know, but we all listen and nod our approval. And now the wrecking ball is coming. And now they ask what will happen . . . “”Look, that’s her, she comes now. Just look at her. My, oh my,” he slowly shakes his head. “Ah, I’ll tell you what they, they . . . they tell of her honor, grace, and beauty. See how she moves, how she takes that stool.” He stood to his full height and hurried down the counter to pour her drinks. I sipped mine, listening, waiting . . . .

Poetry. “In AN ARCHITECTURE, Chad Sweeney reveals himself to be a Frank Gehry of language: making an overwhelming but coherent form in precise words that measure ‘the violet gleam of girders,’ where ‘art is/the ghost between us.’ The world swells with meaning before things ’smolder,’ ‘collapse,’ ‘drown…. And within the violent changes that he so precisely records, there are moments of rest and deep regard for what is passing. The poem is an elegy for the world in all its beauty and disturbing variety”–Maxine Chernoff. “Chad Sweeney’s AN ARCHITECTURE, with its epigraph from Heraklitus (the philosopher of fiery flux), looks like a house that can’t stand still, its 56 sections shape-shifting through spaces of meaning that are ‘excavated / rather than built.’ Among these magical passages, ‘the nouns are verbs / the conduit between I and I.’ Here, house and inhabitant (as form and content) perpetually exchange their positions, showing ‘the snake / swallowing // peristalsis of / the world // by which these rooms // are constituted.’ In Sweeney’s swift architecture, memory assumes the power of imagination, and language becomes a platform for the mind’s multiplicity: ‘I speak, therefore I are.’ Sweeney, as Vitruvius before him, makes architecture the sister-discipline of music”–Andrew Joron.

From the foot of Jebel Adather, the waterparting runs with second class basins, beginning with the important Wady Kerkera; north of which it meets a series of small basins confined in a triangular space between the lower part of Wady el Ezziyeh and the mountain range of Jebel el Mushakkah, so well known by its termination on the coast in Eas en Nakurah. This group of minor basins has undergone much rectification from the Palestine Exploration Survey. The largest of them are Wady Shemd, and Wady ez Zerka, the latter rising in the mountain of Kh. Belat (alt. 2,467 feet), from which is a panoramic prospect of great extent and beauty. The Tell Belat (alt. 2,020 feet), is a distinct summit to the south in the midst of the Wady Kerkera basin. Among the dubious questions set at rest by the Palestine Exploration Survey, none is more striking than the topography of the Ezziyeh basin. Eobinson’s map throws but little light upon it. Van de Velde’s map and the ” Holy Land ” edited by Dr. George Grove for Dr. William Smith’s Ancient Atlas, are remarkable approximations to the truth. But the latest map in Mons. V. Guerin’s elaborate ” Description de la Galilee ” erroneously throws the whole of the southern part of the upper Ezziyeh basin from Kh. Shelabun (Guerin’s Kh. Cha’laboun) to Kh. el Kurah (Guerin’s Kh. Koura) into the Kerkera basin. So also does Lieutenant Van de Velde. The Basin Of WadyKerkera. Although this basin is only of the second class, being divided from that of the Jordan by the southern part of the upper plateau of the Ezziyeh, it is of some extent and not devoid of natural features. These however seem to have escaped the travellers who have visited this region,

In his admirable lectures on art, Sir Joshua Reynolds, to whom we are already much indebted, tells us that ” the Apollo and the Venus are a combination of these several sectional beauties, a union of all the excellent qualities that these singly possess, just as Achilles, whom Homer intends to make a perfect man, is a compound of all his confederates ;” or as John Milton, who, Macaulay tells us, was the greatest man of his age, ” was neither Puritan, Cavalier, Roundhead, nor of any other single party or persuasion, but made up of the noblest qualities of every party combined in harmonious union, — from the camp and the court, from the conventicle and the Gothic cloister, from the gloomy and sepulchral circles of the Roundhead and the Christmas revels of the hospitable Cavaliers, —his nature selecting and drawing to itself whatever was great and good, while it rejected all the base and pernicious ingredients by which those finer elements were defiled.” And that the Apollo and the Venus are, as Reynolds observes, a combination of all the excellent qualities that the other statues singly possess, we can readily believe, as “perfect beauty in any species must unite all the characters that are beautiful in that species. It cannot exist in one to the exclusion of the rest; no one, either, must be predominant, that no one may be deficient;” for wherever, as already shown, one quality — as of activity in the Mercury and Diana, and intellectuality in the Minerva — becomes so predominant as to merge or shut out the rest, it renders such representation sectional, destroys its general character, the great element of perfect beauty. Ashdown Forest

Ashdown Forest

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Ashdown Forest, situated 30 miles 48.3 km south of London in the county of East Sussex, England, is an area of tranquil open heathland and woodland on the highest sandy ridge-top of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It reaches its highest altitude of 732 feet 223 m above sea level at Greenwood Gate Clump near King’s Standing and offers expansive views across the High Weald in all directions, but particularly northwards toward the Greensand Ridge and North Downs, and southwards to the chalk escarpment of the South Downs. Ashdown Forest’s origins lie in Norman times as a royal forest set aside for deer-hunting. By 1283 the forest was fenced in by a 23 miles 37.0 km pale enclosing a hunting park of 20.5 square miles 5,300 ha. Gates and hatches in the pale allowed local people to enter to graze their livestock, collect firewood and cut heather and bracken for animal bedding. In 1693 more than half the forest was taken into private hands. The rest, some 9.5 square miles 2,500 ha, remained common land that today is entirely open for public access subject to various byelaws.

Like two fair lilies drooping from one stem, Two alabasters taken from one mould, The sunny hair, soft eyes, and slender frame, Each baby grace and feature still the same— But ah! what contrast does their future hold! To one is given a pledge that must remain Unchanged as heaven’s eternal, living truth, That sorrow ne’er shall wring his heart with pain, No thought of sin his guileless spirit stain, Nor death nor sickness ever blight his youth, My Two Sons. 15 But in an atmosphere all love and peace, His little life goes calmly, sweetly on, ‘Mid purest pleasures that will never cease, In grace and beauty that must still increase, When earth’s best gifts are long since past and gone. At Home in the Heart of Appalachia

At Home in the Heart of Appalachia

$0.99

John O’Brien’s deeply evocative book re- veals a place and a way of life—and the lives of an estranged father and son whose differences rest, ironically, in their own powerful bonds to Appalachia.John O’Brien was born in Philadelphia, his father having left his beloved home in the West Virginia mountains after an impoverished childhood made all the more painful by family tragedy. Struggling to escape a father defeated by disappointment, displacement, and poverty, John too left home. When John decided to settle near his father’s birthplace in West Virginia, he hoped to comprehend the elder O’Brien’s attachment to the land, as well as the disabling fatalism he had carried north. What he discovered is hardly the mythic Appalachia most Americans imagine, but a world of extravagant beauty—lush with green mountains, deep forests, ice-cold trout streams, and small hill farms. The people we meet who inhabit this land are for the most part unpretentious, working class, straightforward, open, commonsensical, and easygoing. They tend to look back more than most Americans do, defining themselves by how they fit into an extended family that includes their ancestors. We are in a mountain culture that feels old and deeply rooted, that follows a traditional way of life. It is a world the author would finally love and call his own.We also come face-to-face with provincialism, intolerance, and—perhaps Appalachia’s defining legacy—the horrors of the coalfields and chemical plants. We see clearly what rapacious greed and exploitation have done for generations to much of the landscape and to the lives of thepeople. And we learn of the stream of reformers and missionaries, ever ready to show Appalachia the way, whose real contributions tend to be negligible or absurd. In this clear-eyed, beautifully rendered telling of his story and his father’s, John O’Brien gives us, as

Excerpt: Tallulah Brockman Bankhead (January 31, 1902 December 12, 1968) was an American actress, talk-show host, and bon vivant. Bankhead was born in Huntsville, Alabama to William Brockman Bankhead and Adelaide Eugenia Bankhead (née Sledge). She was named after her paternal grandmother. Her mother died as a result of blood poisoning on February 23, 1902, shortly after Bankhead’s birth. Bankhead has been described as “an extremely homely child”, overweight and with a deep, husky voice resulting from chronic bronchitis. However, others described her as an exhibitionist, performer, personality, and star from the very beginning. Bankhead came from the powerful Bankhead and Brockman political family, active in the Democratic Party in the South in general and Alabama in particular. Her father was the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1936-1940 (in the 74th, 75th, and 76th Congresses), immediately preceding Sam Rayburn. She was the niece of Senator John H. Bankhead II and granddaughter of Senator John H. Bankhead. Bankhead herself was a Democrat, albeit one of a more liberal stripe than the rest of her family. Her older sister, Evelyn Eugenia (b. January 24, 1901 – died 1979) was known as “Sister”. Tallulah’s family sent her to various schools in a vain attempt to keep her out of trouble, which included several years at a Roman Catholic convent school (although her father was a Methodist and her mother an Episcopalian). At 15, Bankhead won a movie-magazine beauty contest and convinced her family to let her move to New York. She quickly won bit parts, first appearing in a non-speaking role in The Squab Farm. During these early New York years, she became a peripheral member of the Algonquin Round Table and known as a hard-partying gi… More:

 Bedroom Eyes

Bedroom Eyes

$0.99

Bedroom Eyes Sometimes chance brings us together with the people who’ll come to mean most to us in the strangest ways. Like the way it brought together Liana Banner and Nate Harden: She was an interior designer from New York, come home to her family’s suburban farmhouse for the summer to rest, recuperate, and recover. A few weeks of home-cooked meals, sun-drenched afternoons, and dips in the local pond would cure the ills that ailed her. The pond was on the neighbors’ property, of course. Liana had known the old owner before he’d passed away – and all she knew about the new owner that that the land had been bought by a real estate investment trust. She didn’t know the new owner was in town; she never would have guessed that sort of a tycoon would actually live on a rural investment property. Liana never would have dreamed his turquoise eyes watched her as she slipped sky-clad into the pond.* Nate Harden didn’t know what to make of the trespasser skinny-dipping in his pond. With her silvery blond hair and sapphire eyes, she reminded him of a fairy nymph, a creature of legendary beauty. But when Liana Banner emerged from the water, there was no hiding the fact that she was a woman – proud, lovely, and defiant. And in that moment, he knew that he had to make her his own. Fate and love are strange that way; and when they snare us, stranger still.

But, There is another shore, upon the other side, the shore of Province Wellesley, distant from the nearest point of Pinang, about two miles. Far to north and far to south, an endless grove of palm trees fringes the strip of yellow sand, which is sometimes land and sometimes sea. Behind the palms are acres of rice fields, villages, hamlets, and isolated huts ; then low hills, forest, and higher hills ; range upon range in ever rising steps, till the eye loses count in heat waves, mist, and distance. Nearly due north, a little inland, and distant about thirty-five miles, stands the sharp peak of Gunong Jerai, five thousand feet high. Almost in a line with this mountain, some hazily-blue islands seem to swim on the surface of the sea. Looking south, the coast line of Pinang curves, crescent-wise, to its extreme point, and in the land-locked space of water are islands, large and small, clad like the rest in green. What is called the South Channel is not often used now except by coasting steamers, but the approach to Pinang is even more attractive by this route than by the North Channel. The beauty of the place comes more gradually, sinks deeper into the appreciation, and leaves a picture of form and colour, a sensation of real warmth and real life, which only the East can offer. This feeling will be intensified if the traveller is fortunate enough to see what I have tried to describe under the glamour of a moonlit night. Yet the pride of Pinang is the Hill, and those who reach the summit will not regret the effort. Looking westward,

To the one-hundred-fifty-year-old house that had served the first lighthouse keeper on the turn of land called Browns Point, had come twelve people from Oregon and Washington. They were healers, people with gifts of all kinds. People who were looking for a safe place to gather, to rest a bit, share some food and talk about the work they were involved in . . . and they were being hunted. The state of Washington was on a witch-hunt again, only this time they were including healers, especially unlicensed healers. Ellie was excited to welcome her friends to her home where they would celebrate the summer solstice. They were intent on finding ways to help other healers avoid persecution, especially their friend who was awaiting the court’s decision to curtail his practice permanently or let him continue his practice unhindered. When the peaceful support of their friend turns ugly, Ellie and her friends find themselves using their individual and collective talents to bring back two of their friends from death and then use those same gifts to search out and stop a dark enemy.About the Author: J. A. Summers is a resident of the state of Washington. After a near death experience changed her life, she now walks the path of the mystic, going where she is led and loves the beauty of the Northwest. There is a pivotal point on North-bound I-90 which she particularly loves. From there you can see the snow-capped Cascade Mountains in the rearview mirror, thinning high desert pines all around, and the beginning of Eastern Washington’s deserts as they spread out ahead..

Where are they all, the dear familiar faces, Who round the Christmas log in glad array, With glass on high to honor from their places That dear old soul, not long since passed away ? But my spring of life has waned, and I Am waiting now to hear the angels call My soul from hence, to join their souls on high, Where in a fairer world I’ll meet them all. OUR LOVE-BIRDS. Like, the dawn of the day in its cradle away Where the footsteps of morning glow golden, And sweet as a flower in its amorous bower Is our little one’s beauty love-folden— In beauty the baby love-folden. When in old times the dove on its errand of love, Returned with a green olive bough bearing, ‘Twasa token of spring, and the blush of a ring Was a mark from the god Hymen wearing— A ring from the god of love wearing. So the tide of life rolls and bears these sweet souls On its waves as our guerdoned heart treasure, Bloom as flowers on our way in the budding of May With their gold and deep purpled heather; And bloom of the deep purpled heather. And with Him who has sent, these sweet lilies have lent, Their footsteps we may leave to His keeping, For the angels of light through the day and the night Hold their ward o’er our little ones sleeping— Our darlings ward waking or sleeping. LOST LOVES. In a note from the far distant hills, A whispering voice from the sea, In a tune like the rippling of rills, Your voices come singing to me— In a musical, mystical strain From the days long ago sped away, And I, rapt in their wondrous refrain, Am lost in their marvello…

Excerpt: Pontedeume is a borough of Ferrolterra in Northwestern Spain in the Province of A Coruña, in the autonomous community of Galicia. Ferrolterra’s population represents the third largest concentration of people in Galicia, and its disperse population exceeds 211,000 (2005). This is the 14th century beautiful Tower of Andrade in the City centre Due to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, it could be said that Pontedeume does not enjoy extreme oscillation in its weather conditions neither in winter nor in summer. The weather is mild all the year around almost as if we were talking about one only season, and that is very different from what happens in other parts of the Iberian Peninsula. Like the rest of Galicia, it is rainy and beautifully green. Still, the summers tend to be a bit dryer than the winters. The borough can be divided into several parishes, also known as “Parroquias”, which differ from each other in extension, population density, economic activities. Farming and services are the main economic activities, though from the late 1950s and particularly from the mid 1970s Pontedeume has develop itself as an attractive coastal resort making a very good use of its history, good weather, natural beauty and wonderful beaches. … More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3734907

“It should be very satisfying to sing hymns to gods whom everyone can agree exist, so tune up your pipes for Apollo, the archer and fair king of days, or for Venus, the soft skinned, because both beauty and sunshine deserve our adoration. How appropriate that the voice you can choose here should be Elizabethan, queen of the Enlightenment, and patron of the poets, George Chapman so much among them, who made the old world new, and heard the voice of heroes in all of Homer’s songs.”—William H. Gass”Chapman’s versions inspired English poets for centuries after his time. They rest on a minute and perceptive reading of the texts. And they retain their power to fascinate and provoke anyone interested in Homer and his afterlife, in Renaissance ideas about classical and modern poetry, or in the development of the language of English poetry.”—Anthony T. Grafton, Princeton University”Oft of one wide expanse had I been toldThat deep-browed Homer ruled as his demesne;Yet did I never breathe its pure sereneTill I heard Chapman speak out loud and bold”—John Keats, “On First Looking into Chapman’s Homer”

It tells the story of a secret love affair between Zhang Sheng, a young scholar, and Cui Yingying, the daughter of a chief minister of the Tang court. The two first meet in a Buddhist monastery. Yingying and her mother have stopped there to rest while escorting the coffin of Yingying’s father to their native town. Zhang Sheng falls in love with her immediately, but is prevented from expressing his feelings while Yingying is under her mother’s watchful eye. The most he can do is express his love in a poem read aloud behind the wall of the courtyard in which Yingying is lodging. Color Stories: Behind the Scenes of America's Billion-Dollar Beauty Industry

Color Stories: Behind the Scenes of America’s Billion-Dollar Beauty Industry

$0.99

For everyone who’s ever slicked on lipstick, flirted with eye shadow, or browsed the bewildering array in any store’s beauty de-partment, Color Stories offers an insider’s view of all the brainstorming, bickering, and bitchery that go into those little sticks of color and pans of powder.Former beauty editor Mary Lisa Gavenas takes us behind the scenes during the nine months that culminate in the launch of a season’s all-important “color stories.” We discover how one shade becomes the “must have,” why makeup artists never use the same products as the rest of us, and exactly how easy — and impossible — it is to start a million-dollar makeup line.Backstage at the runway shows, we’re swept into the catty, chaotic work world of makeup mogul Bobbi Brown and supermodel Gisele Bündchen. At Estee Lauder headquarters, we see the achingly chic Aerin Lauder Zinterhofer spin societal trends into a lipstick lineup. We watch magazines cheat to make makeup work for layouts, find out how Cindy Crawford got to be worth every penny of her $10 million contract, and make the pilgrimage to Dallas as 35,000 of the Mary Kay faithful assemble for the fabled annual Seminar. Along the way, we also learn about marketing, media, and the manipulation of aesthetics, about the codification of physical beauty, and how this industry revolutionized the role of women in business.Through its often funny, sometimes poignant scenes of seduction, courtship, and consummation, Color Stories reveals why women become besotted by beauty products — and why that love affair will never end.

 Creation's Symphony

Creation’s Symphony

$7.46

God’s creation is a symphony, a tapestry of beautiful artwork. God’s face can be seen through the morning sunrise as it dances across the land. His beauty is seen in the roses in springtime. His majesty is felt in the sound of coming storm clouds. God’s promise of love to us can be seen in the light of the moon on the ocean and in the tide that washes against our ankles. The writer reminds us that we must take time to see the beauty around us, to rest in God’s grace and to let God’s love fill us until it overflows. God’s promise of love is for a lifetime. His love is there whether we are living on the mountaintop or in the valley deep. It is the writer’s prayer that the reader will truly see God in these pages.Tim Stewart was born in Florida, grew up in Colorado and relocated to South Carolina for college. He resides with his mom and stepfather, “Pops” in Gilbert, South Carolina. Life began to change unexplainably for Tim during his college years. Although unknown to him at the time, Tim later learned that he had a mental illness and in 2002 was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He has learned over the last few years that schizophrenia is part of who he is. But, more importantly, he knows that God is still in control despite the struggles associated with this disease. With his strong faith in God and the strong support of his family and friends he does his best to live each day to the fullest. There were a party of us that went that morning to see the sights in the neighbourhood of Washington. On horseback we were; Dr Sandford and Mrs Sandford, Colonel Forsyth, whom I had seen at West Point, another gentleman, and myself. I suppose my senses were keened by anxiety ; 1 never shall forget the wonderful beauty of the afternoon and of what we came to see. In some intense moods of mind, it seems as if every sunbeam had daguerreotyping power, and memory the preparedness to receive and retain. And I could tell even now, where there was a sunny bank, and where a group of sun-touched trees; the ring of our horses’ hoofs is in my ear with a thought; and I could almost paint from memory the first view of the camp we went to see. We had crossed over into Virginia; and this regiment — it was Ellsworth’s they told me — was encamped upon a hill, where tents and trees and uniforms made a bright, very picturesque, picture. Ellsworth’s corps ; and he was gone already. I could not help thinking of that; and while the rest of the party were busy and merry over the camp doings, I sat in my saddle looking over some lower grounds below the hill, where several other regiments were going through certain exercises. It looked like war! it went through my heart. And Ellsworth’s soldiers had lost their commander already. Very likely there was somebody to miss and mourn him; somebody at home; his mother ‘ — a young wife, perhaps ” Is Daisy tired already 1″ Dr Sandford’s voice was at my side. I roused myself and said we had had a pretty brisk ride, and I had not been on

HE CAME WEST HAUNTED BY DEATH AND GRIEF…In 1884, a Harvard-educated legislator from New York set off for Dakota Territory. Staggered by the deaths of his mother and wife on the same tragic night, Teddy Roosevelt was returning to a place he had visited the year before, a place that had struck him with its fierce beauty and its bounty of big game and big opportunity. By the Little Missouri River, Teddy Roosevelt established a ranching empire, and soon stood at the center of a storm…AND ON A VIOLENT LAND, HE WAS REBORN…Less than a decade after an Indian rebellion and the Battle of the Little Big Horn, Dakota was being settled by the brave, the ambitious, and the restless. While some men were grabbing power, some were getting away with murder. For Roosevelt, using local cowboys and transplanted Easterners as his ranch hands, this was a place to make his mark, to make a stand and to look a killer in the eye. And this was a time to bring wild Dakota into the heart of America…”Matt Braun is a master storyteller of frontier history.”—Elmer Kelton”Matt Braun is head and shoulders above all the rest who would attempt to bring the gunmen of the old west to life.”—Terry C. Johnston, author of The Plainsmen series

Winner of the 2005 Texas Review Breakthrough Poetry Prize”In a world that is nearly awash in first books, William Wright’s Dark Orchard stands out for its lyrical obsession with the heritage a son may have from parents and from the deeply felt landscape of childhood. . . . The language is filled with a kind of desolation and a beauty that is not quite despair, something that is better known, one suspects, by the young than by the rest of us. We should be grateful for this chance to rediscover its reach.”—Phebe Davidson”William Wright’s poems welcome us into a rich and enchanting universe. Planted in the fecund soil of his native South Carolina, this book’s vision is simultaneously delicate and dangerous, touching and alarming. Woven throughout with the subtle undertones of his poetic forebears (one sees Theodore Roethke, Robert Penn Warren, and James Wright dancing in the shadows), Dark Orchard is an impressive debut volume with a depth of insight that belies the author’s youth, a collection that leaves me thirsting for the next book.”—Stephen GardnerAuthor Biography: Born in 1979, WILLIAM WRIGHT was raised in the ridge-country of Edgefield, South Carolina. His work has appeared in many journals, including Poet Lore, Cimarron Review, Texas Review, Borderlands: Texas Poetry Review, Red Owl, Phoebe, StorySouth: The Best from New South Writers, and Yemassee. From the acclaimed author of Life and Trilobite!, a fascinating geological exploration of the earth’s distant history as revealed by its natural wonders. The face of the earth, crisscrossed by chains of mountains like the scars of old wounds, has changed and changed again over billions of years, and the testament of the remote past is all around us. In this book Richard Fortey teaches us how to read its character, laying out the dominions of the world before us. He shows how human culture and natural history–even the shape of cities–are rooted in this deep geological past. In search of this past, Fortey takes us through the Alps, into Icelandic hot springs, down to the ocean floor, over the barren rocks of Newfoundland, into the lush ecosystems of Hawai’i, across the salt flats of Oman, and along the San Andreas Fault. On the slopes of Vesuvius, he tracks the history of the region down through the centuries?to volcanic eruptions seen by fifteenth-century Italians, the Romans, and, from striking geological evidence, even Neolithic man. As story adds to story, the recent past connects with forgotten ages long ago, then much longer ago, as he describes the movement of plates and the development of ancient continents and seas. Nothing in this book is at rest. The surface of the earth dilates and collapses; seas and mountains rise and fall; continents move.Fortey again proves himself the ideal guide, with his superb descriptions of natural beauty, his gripping narratives, and his crystal-clear, always fascinating scientific explanations. Here is a book to change the way we see the world.

Chapters: Over-Soul, Politics, Self-Reliance, Nature, the Poet, the Transcendentalist, New England Reformers, Circles, Compensation, Experience. Excerpt: “The Oversoul” is an essay by Ralph Waldo Emerson, first published in 1841. The essay includes the following passage: The Supreme Critic on the errors of the past and the present, and the only prophet of that which must be, is that great nature in which we rest, as the earth lies in the soft arms of the atmosphere; that Unity, that Over-soul, within which every man’s particular being is contained and made one with all other; that common heart. For Emerson the term denotes a supreme underlying unity which transcends duality or plurality, much in keeping with the philosophy of Advaita Vedanta. This non-Abrahamic interpretation of Emerson’s use of the term is further supported by the fact that Emerson’s Journal records in 1845 suggest that he was reading the Bhagavad Gita and Henry Thomas Colebrooke’s Essays on the Vedas. Emerson goes on in the same essay to further articulate his view of this dichotomy between phenomenal plurality and transcendental unity: We live in succession, in division, in parts, in particles. Meantime within man is the soul of the whole; the wise silence; the universal beauty, to which every part and particle is equally related, the eternal ONE. And this deep power in which we exist and whose beatitude is all accessible to us, is not only self-sufficing and perfect in every hour, but the act of seeing and the thing seen, the seer and the spectacle, the subject and the object, are one. We see the world piece by piece, as the sun, the moon, the animal, the tree; but the whole, of which these are shining parts, is the soul. Over-soul has more recently come to be used by Eastern phi… More:

 Eyes Of Horus

Eyes Of Horus

$25.95

The third of Joan Grant’s “Far Memory” novels, Eyes of Horus, set in Egypt at the close of the dark XIth Dynasty, is a profound commentary on the power of fear and the unlimited ability of light to shatter it.Eyes of Horus is the story, told in the first person, of Ra-ab, heir to the Nomarch of the Oryx, one of eighteen provinces in Egypt. He comes to learn that the Oryx is different than the rest of Egypt-it is still in touch with the light. The rest of Egypt is plagued by fear and ruled by corruption. Pharaoh is an ineffectual ruler. The priests have replaced the worship of Ptah with the worship of Set. Only the Oryx has cast off these shackles-and it is from the Oryx that a silent brotherhood of the ‘eyes of Horus’-the Watchers of the Horizon-arises, to work and wait for the dawn of a new age in Egypt. ‘Send Fear into Exile’, is the Watchers’ password, and when the time is ripe, Ra-ab leads the Oryx and its followers to victory-and a new Egypt. As a child growing up in Edwardian England, Joan Grant became aware of an astonishing ability to remember previous lifetimes, and as an author professed her seven novels to be based on her personal recollections of other incarnations, male and female, in ancient civilisations.”This book is warm with the sunshine of Egypt, delicate with the beauty of its homes and palaces, its surpassing art… there are also stories of graft, of insolent luxury… but through all runs the spirit of chivalry and heroism and faith.” Times Literary Supplement

 Far Better Rest

Far Better Rest

The French Revolution is vividly brought to life in a brilliant retelling of the classic story that has captured the imagination of readers since the 1850s. In Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities, Sydney Carton is an almost ancillary character. Dickens’ novel tells us the stories of Charles Darnay, Lucie Manette, and Alexandre Manette. Carton disappears from the novel for eleven chapters and several years, reappearing without warning to bring the novel to its chilling and heartbreaking end. Yet Dickens is silent about the circumstances that transformed Carton from a promising youth to an embittered alcoholic and finally to the man who makes the ultimate sacrifice for love. A Far Better Rest imagines his missing personal history and makes him the center of this tragic tale. Born in England of a wealthy, unloving father and a French mother, Sydney is sent to study in Paris, where he meets Charles Darnay and the other students—Robespierre and Camille Desmoulins among them—who will have enormous influence on his life and alter the course of French history. Years later, when Sydney, disinherited, is living a lonely and purposeless existence in London, Charles reenters his life. The beauty and kindness of Charles’s wife, Lucie Manette, affects Sydney so deeply that he secretly devotes his life to her happiness. At last abandoning London for Paris, Sydney becomes a witness to the formation of the French Republic at the end of the eighteenth century and also to one of the most turbulent periods in history. A Far Better Rest is a novel of passion, identity, and history that stands fully in its own right.

Excerpt: The Mirror Has Two Faces is a 1996 American romantic dramedy film produced and directed by Barbra Streisand, who also stars. The screenplay by Richard LaGravenese is based on the 1958 French film Le Miroir à Deux Faces written by André Cayatte and Gérard Oury, which focused on a homely woman who becomes a beauty, which creates problems in her marriage. The film stars Streisand, Jeff Bridges, Pierce Brosnan, George Segal, Mimi Rogers, Brenda Vaccaro and Lauren Bacall. The film received widespread criticism for being an ego production by Streisand who, with Marvin Hamlisch, Robert John “Mutt” Lange, and Bryan Adams, also composed the film’s theme song, “I Finally Found Someone”, and sang it on the soundtrack with Adams. Rose Morgan (Streisand), a shy, plain, middle-aged English literature professor at Columbia University, shares a home with her vain, overbearing mother Hannah (Bacall). When her attractive sister Claire (Rogers) starts preparations for her wedding to Alex (Brosnan), Rose begins to feel her loveless life is empty. Gregory Larkin (Bridges), a Columbia Mathematics teacher who feels sex complicates matters between men and women, is looking for a relationship based on the intellectual rather than the physical. When he overhears Rose’s lecture about chaste love in literature, he becomes intrigued and asks her out, and is impressed by her wit and knowledge. He proposes marriage, with the condition it will be largely platonic, with rare sex only if she needs it. The prospect of spending the rest of her life as a lonely spinster living with her mother seems far worse than a marriage on those conditions, so Rose accepts. Rose’s attraction to Gregory grows, and one night she attempts to seduce him, much to his annoyance. … More:

With poetic cadence and magical tone, Lord draws the reader into life at camp, sharing experiences that range from the mundane to the sublime: the mending of nets; the muscle-wrenching labor of the catch; the exquisite pleasure of an improvised hot-tub; the often unnoticed bounty of the inlet’s flora and fauna. Interwoven throughout the descriptions of quotidian adventure are threads of the deeper history of the region-stories and legends of the native Dena’ina; anecdotes about past and current inlet residents; discussions of the lives of their neighbors, both human and animal, who, like them, live with fish.<p>Fishcamp is Nancy Lord’s eloquent paean to the place she calls home. In clear and richly textured prose, she captures the simple beauty of a life lived with nature, “a part” rather than “apart.” As Lord explains, she shows us in Fishcamp “something about what even one place and its infinitely varied life contributes to the connections among us all and to the wholes we call ‘world’ and ‘culture.’…Wherever our places are and whatever we do in them, perhaps we might all

Its gnarled branches take many an obstinate twist, which show how it has bent to the prevalent winds, yet still in spring it is richly sheeted with blossoms, whose grace and beauty are all the more conspicuous from the sterility around; and to tired travellers, on the sultry mid-day track, it gives a fragrant, sheltered rest. Gertrude Massenger meant to do her duty by her nephew, as by the rest of the world: her manner of doing it was an error in judgment. She started with the idea that every impulse of his natural heart must be vicious; that he would be prone to lying, and other debasing vices, which would call for sharp correction. The sturdy independence with which the lad early repelled and resented her accusations and suspicions, she considered as a sinful pride that must be chastened out of him: yet the severe measure of her discipline did not succeed in breaking or cowing his high spirit. The battle between them was long and hardly contested; an incident that occurred when Gilbert was about nine years old brought it to a close, and left the victory with him. Miss Massenger had a favourite cat by which she set great store; this cat, for reasons unknown, was very obnoxious to Gilbert. One evening, as the two were sitting down to their frugal tea in the dark, disfurnished parlour which, in her habitual self-mortification, it pleased Miss Massenger to inhabit, puss came trotting in, mewing most piteously, with cockle-shells fastened to his paws. ” You have done this, Gilbert!” cried his aunt. ” No, indeed I did not,” answered the boy sturdily. ” I do not believe you: go away from table; you shall not have a morsel to eat until you confess.” Gilbert moved back his chair without speaking, and resumed

SALISBURY AND STONEHENGE. A Pleasant course, if you would drift from the Channel coast into the Midlands, is to go from Southampton, by either Winchester or, less directly, by Salisbury, to Basingstoke, and thence northward by Reading and Oxford. Another good way is to loiter along the west of England, taking the track of the Cathedral Towns, and viewing whatever of historic interest can be observed in those places and in the memorable regions that environ them. There should be no inexorable route, for the chief charm of travel is liberty to indulge fancy, and, in England, whichever way you turn you will surely find some peculiar beauty to reward your quest. My path traversed Salisbury, Amesbury, Stonehenge, Glaston- bury, Wells, Cheddar, Bristol, Gloucester, Worcester, and Evesham, and all the while it seemed to wind through a fairy realm of flowers and dreams. Each part of England has its charming peculiarities, but the general characteristic of English scenery is loveliness. The cities are theworkshops; the rest is a garden of diversified beauty. As you range through the country you gaze on wooded hills glimmering in the distance, dark or bright beneath skies of cloud or sun, — never one thing long, but changeful, like a capricious girl, whose loveliness is the more
