101 Designer One-Skein Wonders $18.95 In 2006, Judith Durant delighted knitters everywhere with her collection One-Skein Wonders: 101 Yarn Shop Favorites. At last, knitters had a rich array of fun, festive patterns for all those yarn "orphans"— single skeins purchased on impulse or left over from long-finished projects. With knitters clamoring for even more of these imaginative patterns, Durant has tapped into a wide circle of knitwear designers across the country to compile a totally fresh collection of enchanting projects. Once again, the excitement of small-scale possibility will attract knitters of all skill levels. Like its predecessor, 101 Designer One-Skein Wonders offers patterns for small projects that can be completed with a single skein of yarn. These designer projects range from the adorable to the elegant. The book includes plenty of patterns for those never-can-have-enough items: hats, scarves, bags, and shawls. It also highlights the unexpected: a useful knitted notebook cover, a fun-to-wear mitered square belt with beads, and an elegant ring bearer pillow. There’s something for everyone here — from the novice knitter to the experienced yarn artisan. With patterns arranged by yarn weight, knitters will easily find broad ranges of possibilities for their particular single skeins. A full-color gallery features detailed photographs of all 101 projects, allowing knitters to browse through all the patterns quickly to find the perfect match for each skein. The patterns in 101 Designer One-Skein Wonders are practical and fun. They’re ideal weekend projects, perfect to give as gifts or wear and enjoy. Because they’re small enough to fit in a tote bag, they’re great to take on the run. Best of all, they offer simple solutions for that stash of single skeins every knitter has tucked away.Whether the yarn was picked up on impulse — because it was on sale, or just too beautiful to resist — or left over from a project |

All My Life for Sale $0.99 The classic American passion for the road meets the current obsession with internet consumption in one of the most original illustrated books to come along in years. One day, John Freyer decided to sell everything he owned on the internet. He invited his friends over to tag all the possessions in his apartment, and he systematically put them up for sale on eBay. An unopened box of taco shells, half a bottle of mouthwash, almost all of his clothes, his favorite records, his sideburns (in a plastic bag), his family’s Christmas presents (not yet given), furniture: John didn’t let sentiment or utility stand in his way. Soon his belongings were sold all over the world, with a bag of Porky’s BBQ Pork Skins making its way to Japan, and a chair ending up in the Museum of Modern Art. With almost all the objects in his life now gone, he started the second phase of his journey: to go visit his one-time possessions in their new surroundings. All My Life for Sale is an extraordinary book that functions as an autobiography, a travel narrative, and a meditation on what the objects we surround ourselves with actually mean to us and what happens when we set them free. Designed by the author himself, it is visually striking, surprisingly moving, and will change the way you look at the things that surround you. Author Biography: John Freyer was born in Syracuse, New York and is the fifth of seven children. After graduating from Hamilton College with a degree in Political Science, Freyer worked at Light Work, a non-profit arts organization in upstate New York. In 1999, Freyer co-founded Wind-Up Films, an action sports film production company. He has been a snowboard instructor, a cinematographer on ski and snowboard films, and a graphic designer. Freyer has created numerous web sites, including his ongoing travelogue Temporama.com. He is currently a Bodine Fellow in the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Iowa and lives in |

A brunette who cut her hair to a medium length after the series’ pilot, Sabrina is known by fans as the “Smart Angel”. Nicknamed “Bree” by her co-workers, she was a more strategic thinker than the other Angels and acted informally as the brains of the operation. (However, Charlie and Bosley still helped connect the dots.) In the Agency conferences, she was the most assertive in dealing with Charlie. In the field, Sabrina tended to take “outside” covers, such as a reporter or city employee while the other Angels would approach a case from the “inside” as decoys. She often used her “brassy” persona, but also appeared as French maid, fashion designer, bag lady, and psychic. Typically, Sabrina would pull the pieces together toward the end of each episode, act as backup in the van, and eventually assist in rescuing the “Angel in danger”. However, she herself was often in tight situations as well. Charlie Townsend may have been the man giving out the instructions and Bosley may have been the overseer, but it was always quite clear Sabrina Duncan was in charge of Charlies Angels in the field. As Charlies most mature and reliable Angel, Sabrina proved herself time and time again. She found more clues than any other and nine out of ten times she would be the one to pin-point a culprit and solve the mystery. Her intellect and brassy charm combined with her bright sense of humor… More: |

Freitag: Individual Recycled Freeway Bags $155.98 In an age of irony, Freitag bags shoulder it all. Respectable, credible, authentic, genuine, trustworthy, and honest, they are an urban tool, a saddlebag for the city cowboy, a messenger bag for the real and the virtual, durable enough to be carried all over the world. Invented by Swiss brothers Daniel and Markus Freitag, who wanted bags just like the ones worn by New York bike couriers, bags that were practical, weatherproof, quick, and easy, the Freitag bag is tailor-made on a small-scale of recycled truck tarpaulins, bicycle inner tubes, and car seatbelts. In line with the Freitag principle, each book is individually bound with a spine made of typical bag material, and it holds a grab bag of printed goodies. In addition to covering the history of the bag and its particular ecological, economic, and sociocultural contexts, "Freitag" contains portraits of 3000 Freitag bags and their owners, most of whom are members of a generation that is as vain as it is critical of consumerism—a generation for whom the Freitag bag is the ideal brand-name product. Hello. What’s your name? Hi. I’m Wendelin Hess. How old are you? Thirty-three. What kind of work do you do? I work as a designer/art director. When did you buy your Freitag bag? Early in 1994. Describe your Freitag bag. Smelly is the first thing I can think of. And very attractive to a visually-trained eye. A pleasant surprise in a world of standardized, mass-produced everyday objects. Edited by Lars Muller. Text by Max Kung. |

Handbag: An Illustrated History $9.99 The handbag has never been more important in fashion than it is today. Whether Prada, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, or Chanel, the It bag of the season is a much-coveted designer item that indicates supreme style cachet—and for which the fashion-minded do not hesitate to spend. In this lush volume, filled with a range of rich historical and contemporary images, fashion authority Caroline Cox explores the history of this must-have accessory, beginning with its development in the nineteenth century with the reticule—essentially a pocket with a handle—to the slouchy, greatly oversized bags popular today. Featured bags include Vuitton’s revolutionary Noe bag for the female traveler, Art Deco clutch bags molded in Bakelite, the Hermès Kelly bag endorsed by Princess Grace of Monaco in the 1950s, and the It bag of the moment, the Marc Jacobs Stam. While a significant minority do indulge in ready-to-wear lines produced by designer labels, most are happy with less brand-conscious garments. Small boutiques and historic department stores like Le Bon Marché and Les Galeries Lafayette sell the big brands, but many French are happy to buy anonymous clothes at knockdown prices in chain stores like Tati, or even in the hypermarket.” |

Excerpt: A full ashtray This circa 1950 Googie or Populuxe ashtray was designed by industrial designer Maurice Ascalon , and manufactured by the Pal-Bell Company. An ashtray is a receptacle for ash and butts from cigarettes and cigars of tobacco and cannabis . Ashtrays are typically made of fireproof material such as glass , heat-resistant plastic , pottery , or metal . The most common ashtray design is a shallow cylinder with a flat base, to rest on a table. Other ashtrays, particularly in public places, are wall mounted, and larger than standard tabletop ashtrays due to the increased use they receive. Many ashtrays have notches at the rim, to hold cigarettes and/or a cigar. In Spain , some ashtrays consist of two interlocking parts, the bottom of which is filled with water. Ashtrays are also often built into cars and dustbins, and provided in toilets and other public places. Ashtrays have been a popular advertising vehicle. Collectors look for ashtrays with clever and unusual ads, colors, shapes and sizes. Some ashtrays of the late 1940s to early 1970s were freeform vehicles for Googie styling. During the 1950s and 1960s, small personal ashtrays were part of a table setting, commonly placed on the top right-hand side, behind the wine and water glasses. Ashtrays in public places are becoming increasingly rare due to the proliferation of smoking bans . In addition, many vehicle manufacturers no longer include ashtrays as standard equipment, instead offering ashtrays and lighter plugs as optional accessories, typically dealer-installed. To fill this niche market, ashtrays which are |

Weekend Sewing: More Than 40 Projects and Ideas for Inspired Stitching $27.5 More than just a pair of days, a weekend is also a state of mind—a feeling of relaxation and freedom to immerse ourselves fully in a favorite activity. In Weekend Sewing, designer Heather Ross presents creative projects for clothing, accessories, and home items that can be made in a weekend or less. Some, like the Quick Garden Gloves and Ruby’s Bloomers, take a few hours; others, like the Weekend-Away Travel Bag and Trapeze Sundress, require a day or two—but all of them capture that weekend feeling.  And because weekends are often the most fun when they’re social, Ross features ideas that encourage us to share our stitching and our time, such as a recipe for soup to simmer while sewing, then serve to guests later in the day, and tips for transporting a sewing machine to a friend’s house for an afternoon of social stitching. The sewing instructions are beautifully illustrated, and patterns for the projects are included on pullout sheets.   |
